How to choose your ideal sofa

A sofa is a large purchase, it’s an investment you want to make sure you get right. So, how do you go about navigating the many different sofas available to choose the right one for you? Ultimately the decision is yours, but there are steps you should follow to give yourself the best chance of finding a sofa you bond with.

Size matters

Size matters

To narrow down the field of options available, make sure you know how much space you’re working with.  If you have an existing sofa that you’d like to replace, use the dimensions of that. Otherwise mark out where you’d like the ideal sofa to sit in your room. This will give you the measurements to filter the available sofas by.

Remember also to measure your doorway – consider how you’re going to get your new sofa into your property, and then into the room you want it in.

The right shape

The right shape

There are many different sofa shapes available. What you want will depend on your personal taste and the space that you have available. If you have a smaller room, then a large corner unit isn’t for you. Similarly, a small two-seater will look out of place on its own in a long, wide room.

Spend a little bit of time familiarising yourself with the different types of sofas that are available. With that information, you’ll be able to decide what you like best and what will be most at home in your space.

Which upholstery?

Which upholstery?

Now you know the size and shape of the sofa you want – what materials do you want it upholstered with? There are a wide variety of upholsteries available for sofas here at Oliver Matthews, all of which are beautiful.

Think about the kind of life you lead, who lives in your house, and what sort of use you expect the sofa to get. If you think it’ll be sat on rarely and you have a quiet home, then you could invest in some beautiful quality suede, for example. But if your sofa is liable to be pounced on by children, dogs, and regular visits from friends and family, a more hard-wearing and easy-cleaning leather might be the wiser option.

Buying the best

Buying the best

As with all purchases, it makes the most sense to buy the best quality that you can afford. A sofa that has been properly made by experienced professionals should last you for several years reliably – it’s an investment worth making.

Remember, you don’t have to just settle for what’s already available. If you have the dream sofa in mind but you can’t find it anywhere, then consider having something made just for you. It’s the easiest way to make sure your sofa is exactly what you want.
